United States Attorney Carol C. Lam announced that Jose Antonio Garcia was arraigned today in federal court in San Diego by United States Magistrate Judge Barbara L. Major on an indictment charging him with bank robbery. Garcia entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney AnnaLou Tirol, who is prosecuting the case, Garcia is charged with robbing the Union Bank of California, 424 West San Ysidro Boulevard, San Diego, California. The indictment alleges that on June 11, 2005, Garcia entered the bank and demanded money from one of the bank tellers. In response to Garcia’s demand, the teller handed him more than $2,500 from the cash drawer. Garcia then fled the bank. He was arrested by the California Highway Patrol one month later.
Garcia is next scheduled to appear in court on February 5, 2007 at 9:00 a.m., before Magistrate Judge Major for a detention hearing.
