Ex-Felon Charged with Attempted Murder of Sheriff's Deputy
LOS ANGELES – A 47-year-old ex-felon was charged today with attempted murder of a police officer and additional charges in connection with Monday’s bank robbery in Malibu that left a sheriff’s deputy seriously injured, the District Attorney’s office announced.
Charles Terreal Washington, (dob 8-12-59), is scheduled to be arraigned after 1:30 p.m. at LAX, Dept. 144. He is charged in case No. SA059337 with 14 felony counts, including assault on a peace officer, evading an officer causing injury, possession of a firearm by a felon, nine robberies and one attempted robbery, said Deputy District Attorney Keri Modder with the Crimes Against Peace Officers unit. The complaint also includes the special allegations of personal use of a handgun, causing great bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held on $2.5 million bail.
Washington is suspected of robbing the Wells Fargo Bank located at 23361 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on Monday. Sheriff’s deputies arrived just as the suspect fled in a blue Honda. During the chase down PCH, Washington allegedly ran down Sheriff’s Deputy James Mulay, who was on a motorcycle. Mulay was seriously injured. The suspect fled the scene.
Washington, a second striker, was arrested on Aug. 29 by El Segundo Police. He is also suspected in a spate of robberies in the South Bay over the weekend.
