Felon Charged with Attempted Murder of Two LAPD Officers
LOS ANGELES – A 31-year-old Los Angeles man was charged today with attempted murder of two LAPD officers after he allegedly opened fire with an AK-47 assault weapon during a traffic stop, the District Attorney’s office announced.
Jose Mercado Perez Jr, (dob 1-15-75), is scheduled to be arraigned some time after 1:30 p.m. in the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Division 30, said Deputy District Attorney Frank Tavelman with the Crimes Against Police Officers Section.
Perez is charged in case No. BA307556 with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of assault on a peace officer with an assault weapon and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The complaint includes gun allegations. Perez is being held on $3.1 million bail.
Perez is suspected of firing an AK-47 at LAPD Officers James Tuck and John Porras, who stopped a black Honda Accord on Saturday night in the Montecito Heights area. Authorities said Tuck, 26, was struck three times and one bullet nearly severed his left hand at the wrist.
Perez, a second striker convicted in 1995 of robbery, is facing four life terms in prison if convicted.
