DRUG DEALERS FROM DOS RIOS PUBLIC HOUSING COMPLEX SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON IN TWO SEPARATE CASES

SACRAMENTO—United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced today that BRIAN PARKER, 33, of Sacramento, and MATEA MALAE, 20, of Sacramento, were sentenced today by United States District Judge Morrison C. England, Jr. to five years and three years respectively in federal prison. PARKER pleaded guilty to sales of crack cocaine in December 2007 and MALAE pleaded guilty to the same charge in January 2008.

These two cases are a result of a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Sacramento Police Department designed to remove drug dealers from the Dos Rios Housing Complex located off of in-bound 160, between 12th Street and Richards Boulevard in Sacramento. The downtown Problem Oriented Policing (POP) officers had contacted the DEA about several individuals, some of whom lived inside the subsidized housing complex and others who drove in from the outside to sell crack cocaine, who had multiple prior felony convictions for drugs and firearms and were distributing drugs, primarily crack cocaine, to residents and drive-up customers. Three other defendants have been indicted as a result.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Anne Pings, who prosecuted the case, PARKER, who lived in the complex, had prior felony convictions for possession of crack cocaine for sale, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana for sale and possession of a controlled substance and was on state parole for a drug conviction at the time he sold crack cocaine to the undercover DEA buyer.

MALAE, who also was a resident of the Dos Rios complex, was a validated gang member. He was arrested on separate, unrelated state-court charges in March 2007 for possession of crack cocaine for sale. After being released back into the community from the state court, he returned to Dos Rios and sold more crack cocaine to an undercover DEA buyer. MALAE was also arrested in May 2007 on separate state-charges for the sales and transportation of cocaine and methamphetamine.
