Gang Member Sentenced to 110 Years to Life for Harbor Gateway Shooting
LONG BEACH-- An Eastside Torrance gang member was sentenced today to 110 years to life in prison for the March 2008 shooting of a 6-year-old boy in the Harbor Gateway area.
Deputy District Attorney John Lonergan of the Hardcore Gang Division said Ernesto Murillo, 26, apologized to the child, who appeared in court with a scar on his head. Murillo was then sentenced by Long Beach Superior Court Judge Gary Ferrari.
On March 4, 2008, five adults and three children -- all family members -- were in the Harbor Gateway area to purchase a vehicle when Murillo drove by their SUV, flashed gang signs and opened fire on their vehicle. One round shattered the back windshield, striking the child in the head.
Murillo pleaded guilty in March to three counts of attempted murder, five counts of assault with a firearm and one count of shooting at an occupied vehicle. He also admitted all gang and gun use allegations.
Charges against a co-defendant, Ismael Torres, 27, of Wilmington, were dismissed in January after prosecutors announced they were unable to proceed.
