Woman Convicted of Westside ATM Murder
LOS ANGELES – One of two defendants charged with murdering a federal employee last year at an ATM in West Los Angeles was convicted today by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury.
Deputy District Attorney Charles Chaiyarachta of the Hardcore Gang Division said the jury deliberated six days before convicting 23-year-old Enjoli Elan McClendon of Inglewood of one count each of first-degree murder, robbery and attempted robbery. The jury, however, did not find true the special circumstances in the case.
McClendon’s co-defendant, 24-year-old McKenzie Carl Bryant, also of Inglewood, will be tried separately. His trial is to start on Monday in the court of Superior Judge Curtis Rappe. He also is charged with murder with special circumstances. The District Attorney’s office decided prior to trial that it would not seek the death penalty against either defendant, meaning if convicted as charged, Bryant would face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Bryant and McClendon were arrested by detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Commercial Crimes Division after the March 9, 2008, murder of Mylus Mondy.
Mondy, an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection worker, was shot to death after walking up to an ATM in the 6600 block of La Cienega Westway. He was shot after his assailant demanded money.
McClendon is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 21. She faces life in prison with the possibility of parole.
