Man Charged in Reseda Explosion Faces Arraignment

VAN NUYS – A man charged with various felony crimes

stemming from an explosion and discovery of a large cache of illegal weapons and ammunition at a home in Reseda is scheduled to appear for arraignment this afternoon in Van Nuys Superior Court.

The case against 64-year-old Edward Louis Wyman (dob 6-30-1945) was filed by the District Attorney’s office yesterday as a felony complaint for arrest warrant. The defendant was arrested by Los Angeles police last night and is to appear for arraignment in Department 100 of Van Nuys Superior Court.

Wyman was charged in case No. LA 062440 with nine felony counts including possession of a destructive device identified as a grenade launcher, possession of deadly and assault weapons described as rifles, possession of an explosive, and child abuse for allegedly endangering a boy 17 and a girl 9 who lived at the home.

Authorities were summoned to the house on Ingomar Avenue in Reseda on May 31 after an explosion in the back yard caused a fire that included exploding rounds of ammunition. Wyman lived at the home with relatives.

After the fire, authorities found a large collection of ammunition, weapons and other ordinance in a barn on the property and the
home. A search warrant was served the following day by Los Angeles police investigators.

Authorities said among items seized were four assault rifles, grenades, artillery rounds, land mines, a cluster bomb and a Vietnam-era shoulder-held rocket launcher. Much of the ordinance seized was destroyed by the LAPD bomb squad.

Bail for Wyman was recommended at $780,000. If convicted as charged, he faces a possible maximum prison term of 11 years and four months.

The case was assigned to Deputy District Attorney Russell T. (Todd) Zink of the Van Nuys Branch office.
