Lost Dog Leads to Attempted Extortion Charge
LOS ANGELES – A convicted sex offender on parole was charged today with attempted extortion after he allegedly offered to return a lost dog to its young female owner in return for cash or sex.
Alfredo Jaime Dempkey, (dob 7-17-81), is scheduled to be arraigned after 1:30 p.m. at the Airport Superior Court, Department 144, said Deputy District Attorney Jan Perlstein. Dempkey was charged in case No. SA071550 with one count of attempted extortion. Prosecutors will ask that bail be set at $170,000.
On Friday, the Lancaster resident allegedly found a lost cocker spaniel/toy poodle mix and contacted the dog’s teenage owner from the dog’s tags, officials said. Dempkey offered to return the dog for $70 or sexual favors.
They arranged to meet in an El Pollo Loco parking lot, where he was arrested Friday night by police. The dog was returned to the owner.
