Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Gardena Police Officer

TORRANCE – Attempted murder and other felony charges were filed by the District Attorney’s office today against a 21-year-old Carson man in connection with the shooting and wounding of a Gardena police officer earlier this month.

Deputy District Attorney Lowell Anger of the Crimes Against Police Officers Section (CAPOS) said Trevon Willis (dob 11-21-1986) is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday in Torrance Superior Court. He already had been scheduled to appear in Department G in Torrance for the scheduling of a probation violation hearing regarding a separate case involving a felony firearms charge.

Anger charged Willis in case No. YA070547 with one count each of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon with one prior conviction. A 2004 burglary conviction was cited in the complaint.

The complaint also alleged that Willis personally used a handgun to commit the crimes and the victim, Officer Eric Hyde, suffered great bodily injury.

The officer was shot twice in the leg during an exchange of gunfire in the 1300 block of West Rosecrans Avenue in Gardena on Jan. 9. Willis was arrested after the shooting and has been held on a possible probation violation since then.

If convicted, Willis faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. Bail was recommended at $2 million.

Willis also faces a separate case (TA094283) in Compton. That also involves felony firearms violations. A hearing to schedule a preliminary hearing in that case has been set for Feb. 20.
