Man sentenced for Sheriff’s Deputy Murder, Attempted Robbery
LONG BEACH – A 21-year-old man who fatally shot an off-duty Sheriff’s deputy was sentenced today to 29 years to life in prison, the District Attorney’s Office announced.
Justin Ashley Flint was sentenced by Long Beach Superior Court Judge Joan Comparet-Cassani for the 2006 slaying of Sheriff’s Deputy Maria Cecilia Rosa, who was gunned down in an alleged robbery attempt. Judge Cassani presided over the defendant’s trial.
Flint, one of two men implicated in the murder, was convicted last month of one count each of first-degree murder and attempted robbery. The second defendant, 23-year-old Frank Christopher Gonzalez, the alleged shooter, faces a separate trial scheduled for March 19. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Gonzalez.
Deputy Rosa was killed in the early morning hours of March 28, 2006, as she walked out of a friend’s home in Long Beach. Deputy Rosa was on her way to work at the Inmate Reception Center at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.
