Criminal Charges Filed Against Man Accused of Using Child as a Shield

SAN FERNANDO – Kidnapping and other felony charges were filed by the District Attorney’s Office today against a 25-year-old man accused of kidnapping an 18-month-old toddler and using her as a shield to hold off police.

Antonio Llerenas (dob 8-4-1982), also known as Elmer Henriquez, was scheduled to appear for arraignment this afternoon in Department S of San Fernando Superior Court.

He was charged in case No. PA060703 with one count each of kidnapping a victim under the age of 14, false imprisonment of a hostage and child abuse. Bail was recommended at $700,000.

Llerenas, who gave a Pacoima address when arrested on Tuesday, faces a maximum of 14 years in state prison if convicted of the felony charges filed against him.

Los Angeles police said the pre-dawn incident occurred on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at a Sylmar motel on San Fernando Road. The defendant allegedly grabbed the child and dangled her from a second-story balcony. He also choked the child, police said. She reportedly suffered minor injuries.

In news accounts of the case, police were quoted as saying the defendant was angry at the child’s mother because she broke his meth pipe. The relationship between the mother and the defendant was not made clear, but police said he is not the child’s father.

The case was filed by Deputy District Attorney Carolyn McNary of the San Fernando office. It has not yet been assigned to a trial prosecutor.
