Charges Filed Against Man Accused in the Traffic Deaths of Two in Hollywood

LOS ANGELES – The 21-year-old driver of a BMW that collided with two cars in Hollywood early Saturday was charged today with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Carlos Steven John (dob 5-22-1986), who gave a Granada Hills address when booked, also was charged with felony driving under the influence causing injury. He was expected to appear for arraignment this afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court Department 30, fifth floor, Criminal Justice Center.

Case No. BA334290 charges John with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and two counts of driving under the influence causing injury. Neither of the victims has been identified. They were referred to in the complaint as John Doe #1 and John Doe #2.

The crash occurred before dawn on Dec. 29, 2007, at Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue. Authorities said John, who was alone in his car, had been street racing with another BMW just prior to the collision. Although the other BMW had driven away, John’s car was traveling about 60 mph when it collided with the other vehicles, authorities said.

Two males – the driver and his passenger -- in one car were killed in the fiery crash. The woman driver of a second car escaped and was not seriously injured.

Bail for John was recommended at $200,000. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 12 years in state prison.

A trial prosecutor has not yet been assigned to the case. It was filed by Deputy District Attorney Joseph Shidler of the Central Complaints Division.
